Overview
Vaala Upper Secondary School offers a modern, attractive learning environment beside the nature and the beautiful landscape of lake Oulujärvi. Participating to international collaboration has been our strength over two decades.
We are ranked one of the best high schools in our area. We are well known for our school´s atmosphere. At the start, we have an orientation trip for the beginners in order to have a good relationship between each other and to get along with whole group.
Our innovative and dedicated staff offers the best possible pedagogical approach, support and technology in order to support individual learning of the students. We strive for the results and we can proudly say that after graduation from Vaala Upper Secondary School, our students will have extremely good foundation for continuing studies e.g. in the University. Even though we are rather small school, we are actively developing our teaching, elaborating working methods, following the latest research of educational science and continuously taking part to several national and international projects.
Vaala Upper Secondary School is also an official Geopark school. That’s why Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark, as a designated site in UNESCO’s International Geoscience and Geoparks Program, is actually included as a cross cutting theme in our local curriculum. That offers students more in depth knowledge of local history, geography, biology, etc. With Geopark we have a great pleasure having close cooperation with Universities, both in national and international level.
In the summer 20-30 degrees celcius, in the winter could be minus 20 degrees. 90 km to Oulu, 90 km to Kajaani, 600 km to Helsinki. After high school our students typically apply to University of Oulu.
The school centre is located near Vaala municipality centre, where are health care centre, railway station, grocery stores, etc all in less than 1 kilometre distance.

Free: All materials, books and equipments, own laptop, healthcare, lunch, tutor, accommodation, driving license (if wanted), international trips to Europe, free admit to gym
Accommodation
Accommodation could be shared with roommate or may have own apartments for each. Apartment doesn´t cost anything, student only have to pay for electricity and water that are used.
